EKO HOT BLOG reports that the decision followed Tuesday’s protest by students of the polytechnic over the use of the school’s facilities as a temporary orientation camp for members of the National Youth Service Corps.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Hajia Sa’adatu Modibbo Kawu, the governor announced the constitution of a committee to probe the incident and the circumstances surrounding the protest.
The governor also ordered the rector to hand over to the most senior Deputy Rector, who will act in the position until further notice.
According to the statement, a three member panel has been set up to investigate both the remote and immediate causes of the protest, as well as the handling of the situation by the school management.
The committee is chaired by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Senior Ibrahim Sulyman. Other members are the Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Nafisat Buge, and the Permanent Secretary, Service Welfare, Dr. Mrs Mercy Olufunke Shittu.
The statement read, “Kwara State Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrasaq has announced a three person panel to investigate the remote and immediate causes of the recent student protest at the Kwara State Polytechnic.
“The committee has two weeks to submit its report to the Governor. Its terms of reference include examining the causes of the protest and how it was handled, recommending measures to prevent a recurrence, and making further recommendations for the growth of the institution.
“The Governor has meanwhile directed the Rector of the Polytechnic, Engr. Dr. Abdul Jimoh Mohammed, to immediately step aside from his role until further notice, while the most senior Deputy Rector acts in his place in the interim.
