Lauretta Onochie, a former Special Assistant on Social Media to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, has joined the debate about Seyi Tinubu’s potential bid to become Lagos State governor.
Critics and political analysts believe the recent impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa, the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, was a calculated move to clear the path for Seyi, the son of President Bola Tinubu, to succeed Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

While supporters of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) see nothing wrong with Seyi’s rumored ambition, others argue it is inappropriate for a father and son to simultaneously lead Nigeria and Lagos, the country’s economic hub.
Onochie, however, insists that Seyi Tinubu has the legal right to pursue political ambitions. She emphasized that Nigerian laws do not prevent individuals from running for office simply because their parents are or were in power.
In a tweet on Wednesday, Onochie urged Nigerians to stick to the law when discussing Lagos State’s political future. She said:
“To become a governor in Nigeria, the law does not stop those whose parents were governors or presidents from contesting. Let us follow the law when debating Lagos State succession. We cannot have one set of laws for Nigeria and another for Lagos.”
To back her point, Onochie outlined the legal qualifications required to run for the governorship position.
Along with her tweet, she shared a photo highlighting potential candidates for the 2027 Lagos governorship race. These included Lagos Deputy Governor Babafemi Hamzat, President Tinubu’s Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, former Lagos Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, Senator Tokunbo Abiru, the impeached Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, and Seyi Tinubu.
