- Lagos APC Rejects Claims of Political Motive in Deaths of Female Councillors

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress APC has dismissed suggestions that the recent deaths of four female councillors in the state are politically motivated, calling such claims unfounded and insensitive.
Eko Hot Blog reports that in just under two months following the 27 July 2025 inauguration of newly elected council chairmen, vice chairmen and councillors, four female lawmakers have tragically passed away.

The deceased include:
- Oluwakemi Rufai, Councillor Ward C Ibeju Lekki, who died on 13 August 2025, 17 days after inauguration.
- Zainab Shotayo, Councillor Ward C Chief Whip Odiolowo Ojuwoye LCDA, who died on 18 August 2025, 22 days after inauguration. She was the only female councillor elected in her local council development area.
- Princess Ajose, daughter of Oba Oyekan Possi Ajose, Alapa of Apa Egun Awori Kingdom, who died within two months of taking office alongside Badagry West LCDA Chairman Rauf Ibrahim Kayode Yemaren also known as RIKAY.
- Basirat Oluwakemi Mayabikan, Councillor Ward F Shomolu, who died on 21 September 2025, 56 days after inauguration.

Addressing the situation, Seye Oladejo, spokesperson for Lagos APC, urged the public to avoid spreading misinformation.
He emphasised the party’s commitment to increasing female representation in politics and noted that the recent elections had prioritised the inclusion of women in leadership roles across the state.
“While we mourn the loss of our colleagues, it is important for the public to exercise caution and refrain from speculative narratives,” Oladejo said.
The party also called on residents to support the families of the deceased and respect the sensitive nature of the situation while reiterating its dedication to promoting women’s participation in governance across Lagos State.
