“The state is paying special attention to organic waste management due to its high global warming potential,” said Omobolaji Tajudeen Gaji, Permanent Secretary, Office of Environmental Services, represented by Mrs. Azeezat Afinowi-Subair, Head of the Climate Change Unit in the Ministry.
Gaji commended the C40 cities for partnering with the state government, ensuring that organic waste is converted into valuable products such as organic compost and biogas. He emphasized that the waste sector is being prioritized because it is the second-highest contributor to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the Lagos emissions inventory.
The Permanent Secretary expressed appreciation for the farmers and horticulturists who attended the workshop in large numbers to gain practical insights on how to produce and manage organic waste.
Mr. Maximus Ugwuoke, the Lagos C40 City Adviser, explained that Lagos is one of seven African cities where C40 is supporting the implementation of climate action under the Urban Climate Action Programme. Ugwuoke noted that C40 cities were interested in the outcome of the mentorship programme associated with the training workshop, assuring more partnerships in the future.
