The Lagos State Government has issued a 48-hour quit notice to illegal traders and occupants under the Idumota and Ebute Ero Police overhead bridges.

This directive comes in response to environmental law violations and severe degradation in the area.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, made this announcement during an inspection visit on Sunday. He emphasized that failure to vacate within the stipulated time would lead to severe consequences.

Meanwhile, the government also ordered the immediate unsealing of the Oke Arin/Gorodom Market after reaching a mutual agreement with traders.

The market was initially shut down due to environmental degradation and encroachment on drainage alignments.

During the inspection, Wahab was accompanied by key government officials, including the Special Adviser on Environment, Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu, and the Managing Director of the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin.

Wahab revealed that three weeks prior, officials had observed severe encroachment, with traders selling directly on drainage systems.

The government took action to clear these blockages and re-establish proper drainage flow. Traders later provided a written commitment to maintain cleanliness, leading to the market’s reopening.

In addition, Wahab stressed the need for traders to prioritize environmental hygiene to prevent disease outbreaks such as cholera, diarrhea, and typhoid.

He also reiterated the government’s ban on styrofoam products due to their negative impact on drainage and public health.
