LASUTH Raises Concern over Epileptic Power Supply

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) is facing significant challenges due to the ongoing unavailability of power supply from the Independent Power Project company (IPP).

The prolonged power outage is posing threats to normal operations and the well-being of patients at the tertiary hospital.

EDITOR’S PICKS

In a series of tweets posted on its official Twitter handle, @LASUTHikeja, the management of LASUTH revealed that for the past five weeks, the hospital has been heavily reliant on generators as the IPP has failed to provide adequate power supply. The management further explained that periodic shutdowns of the generators are necessary to ensure trouble-free operation.

In the tweets tagged “Power Situation in LASUTH,” the hospital management expressed regret over the inconvenience caused to some patients and highlighted their efforts to judiciously ration the available power supply. Emphasizing the importance of maintaining high-quality care and service for patients, as well as prioritizing essential power supply to critical areas, the management acknowledged the significance of addressing the situation urgently.

While appealing for patients’ understanding and patience, LASUTH’s management expressed hope that normalcy would be restored as soon as possible.

The situation is not new to LASUTH, as in 2022, the Lagos State Government approved the purchase of three new 500 KVA power-generating sets to enhance the hospital’s power supply. These generators were intended to supplement the power supply from the Mainland Independent Power Project, which had been plagued by inconsistency due to a shortage of gas supply for the turbines.

Since their installation, the generators have been operating almost continuously, leading to the need for rationing the available power supply. LASUTH has experienced a series of blackouts in the past due to the perennial shortage of electricity from the IPP.

In February 2022, LASUTH encountered a collapse in electricity supply from the IPP, resulting in a shortage of water supply for several days due to insufficient capacity in the available generators to meet the demand.
