  • Tinubu assures governors that local government autonomy won’t undermine their power.
  • He stresses the need for federal-state collaboration on development.
  • Tinubu urges governors to prioritize agriculture for economic stability.

President Bola Tinubu stated that the financial autonomy granted to local governments is not an attempt to diminish the role of governors in the third tier of government.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the President, who tasked the 36 state governors with leading development at the grassroots level, emphasized that the leadership of governors at the subnational level is critical to achieving food security, economic prosperity, and rapid national growth.

Tinubu made this statement when members of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF), led by Kwara State Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazak, paid him a New Year visit at his Ikoyi residence in Lagos on Wednesday.

He emphasized the importance of grassroots development and dispelled rumors of disagreements with the governors.

“We will not fight among ourselves. I will drive the change. You control your local governments. You can restore hope by effectively fulfilling the expectations of the people at the grassroots level.

“There have been rumors about disagreements on local government autonomy. No. Just drive development at the local government level. Nobody wants to take them away from you, but we need collaboration. Let’s work together to ensure Nigeria is better off for it,” Tinubu said.

He urged governors to prioritize agricultural growth as a pathway to economic stability.

“You are the most important link to Nigeria’s prosperity and development. The Federal Government accounts for about 30 to 35 percent of the allocated revenue; the rest comes to you. The agricultural value chain depends on you. You own the land, and the job is in your hands.

“We have to work harder, grow more, and ensure that the situation with our currency improves. Nigeria will see prosperity, but it requires consistent effort from all of us,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of the governors, Kwara State Governor Abdulrazak, who is also the chairman of NGF, assured the President of their full support.

“I must confess that I have not completed two years in this administration, but I’ve already done more projects in these two years than in the four years of my first term.

“We are receiving more funding due to the restructuring of the economy. Yes, there is inflation, but we are overcoming it,” the governor said.
