EKO HOT BLOG reports that Amorim was informed of the decision on Monday morning at the club’s Carrington training ground. Members of the first team squad were also briefed shortly after.
Former United midfielder and current Under 18s coach Darren Fletcher has been appointed caretaker manager ahead of Wednesday’s Premier League fixture away to Burnley.
The 40 year old Portuguese coach had been due compensation estimated at £12 million if dismissed before November 1, although the exact terms of his severance package remain unclear.
Amorim spent 14 months in charge at Old Trafford during a turbulent period that saw Manchester United record their worst league campaign in more than 50 years and miss out on European qualification for only the second time in 35 years. He leaves the club sitting sixth in the Premier League.
In an official statement, the club said, “Ruben Amorim has departed his role as head coach of Manchester United. Ruben was appointed in November 2024 and led the team to a UEFA Europa League Final in Bilbao in May.”
Sunday’s draw with Leeds proved to be Amorim’s final match in charge. His tenure had been marked by inconsistent performances, growing fan frustration and criticism on social media, including backlash earlier this season after footage circulated of him using coaching magnets in the dugout during a defeat to Grimsby.

Manchester United are yet to confirm a permanent replacement as speculation grows over the club’s next managerial appointment.
