Mass Protests Erupt as Manchester United Hike Season Ticket Prices

  • Manchester United to increase season ticket prices by 5% for the third straight year, citing rising operating costs.
  • Fans express disappointment over lack of widespread price freeze, despite under-16 prices remaining unchanged.
  • New measures include variable match pricing for non-season ticket holders and increased minimum attendance for season ticket holders.

Manchester United will raise season ticket prices by around 5% for the third consecutive year, citing the need for greater financial sustainability.

The Manchester United Supporters Trust (MUST) acknowledged the rise was “less than many feared” and welcomed a price freeze for under-16s. However, they expressed disappointment that the club disregarded calls for a broader freeze across all ticket categories.

Since Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his Ineos group became co-owners last year, several financial decisions have sparked backlash, including fan protests at Old Trafford during last week’s game against Arsenal.

Among the new measures for the 2025-26 season is a game categorisation system for non-season ticket holders, meaning ticket prices will vary depending on the match. Season ticket holders will also be required to attend or transfer tickets for at least 16 of 19 Premier League home games, up from 15.

United CEO Omar Berrada said the club “worked hard to come up with a pricing package that is fair and reasonable” to help manage rising operating costs.

MUST criticised the move, saying: “We fail to see any justification for the increase,” adding that the game categorisation model is “a source of major concern.”

“For several months, we have argued that the club should take a broader view and freeze ticket prices for next season,” MUST concluded.

“Other clubs have done that already and at United it would have sent a powerful message about the need for everyone to pull together to get the club out of the very difficult position it finds itself in.”

Berrada said: “We understand that any price rise is unwelcome, especially during a period of under-performance on the pitch, and we listened carefully to the strong arguments put forward by the FAB (Fan Advisory Board) in favour of a freeze.

“However, the club has decided it would not be right to keep prices unchanged while costs rise and the club continues to face financial issues.

“We have kept the increase to the lowest possible level and protected our youngest season ticket holders from any rises, while ensuring the club remains financially strong enough to invest in improving the team.”
