Mbappe rescues Real Madrid with a crucial equalizer in the Madrid Derby.
Controversial penalty converted by Julian Alvarez sparks debate.
La Liga title race tightens as Barcelona looks to close the gap.
Kylian Mbappe salvaged a crucial 1-1 draw for Real Madrid against Atletico Madrid in a heated derby on Saturday, keeping Los Blancos at the top of La Liga.
Julian Alvarez gave Atletico the lead with a contentious first-half penalty, dinking the ball home in style. However, Mbappe struck early in the second half, capitalizing on a loose ball to score in his first Madrid derby appearance.
With the draw, Real Madrid remains just one point ahead of second-placed Atletico, while Barcelona, in third, has a chance to close the gap when they face Sevilla on Sunday.
“We’re in the fight and will keep pushing until the end,” Alvarez told Movistar after the game. “I was a little nervous about the penalty, but I knew what I wanted to do, and it turned out great for the team.”
Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti opted for an ultra-attacking lineup, fielding Mbappe, Vinicius Junior, Jude Bellingham, and Rodrygo together instead of a more conservative approach. The star-studded front line worked hard on both ends of the pitch, making for a fiercely contested first half with few clear chances.
Vinicius had one of the best opportunities for Madrid, but his shot dragged wide midway through the opening period. Meanwhile, Atletico players were frustrated when Dani Ceballos received only a yellow card for a rough tackle on Pablo Barrios.
The game’s biggest controversy came when Aurelien Tchouameni, filling in at centre-back due to injuries to Antonio Rudiger and Eder Militao, accidentally stepped on Samuel Lino’s foot inside the box. After a VAR review, referee Cesar Soto Grado awarded a penalty, sparking outrage from Madrid, especially since the ball had already moved past both players when the incident occurred.
Real Madrid had already criticized La Liga referees earlier in the week following a controversial decision in their shock loss last weekend, adding extra pressure on the officials for this match.
Alvarez made no mistake from the spot, converting with a cheeky Panenka—the first penalty awarded against Madrid in La Liga this season.
