At least 41 people have lost their lives in a tragic bus accident in southern Mexico, according to officials in the state of Tabasco.
The fatal collision occurred in the early hours of Saturday near the small city of Escárcega. Images from the scene show the bus completely burned out after being engulfed in flames following the crash.

Tour’s Acosta, the bus operator, confirmed that 48 passengers were on board, traveling from Cancun to Tabasco, when the vehicle collided with a trailer. The company expressed deep regret over the incident and stated that it was cooperating with authorities to determine the cause of the accident. It also asserted that the bus was operating within speed limits.
“The public ministry has informed us that the investigation is being conducted in the prosecutor’s office of Candelaria, Campeche. Relatives of the passengers will need to visit this department to complete the necessary procedures,” Tour’s Acosta said in a statement on Facebook.

Rescue and recovery efforts are ongoing, including the identification of the deceased. Tabasco’s Secretary of Government, Ramiro López, stated that authorities would provide an update on the number of victims and their identities later on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the local council of Palacio Municipal de Comalcalco has pledged to assist in transferring the bodies of the victims.
