The management of Kebbi State University of Science and Technology, Aliero (KSUSTA), has confirmed the deaths of six students following an outbreak of cerebrospinal meningitis.
EKO HOT BLOG reports that in a statement released on Saturday, the university’s Public Relations Officer, Mustapha Ango, expressed deep sorrow over the tragic incident on behalf of the institution. He conveyed the condolences of the Vice-Chancellor, B. G. Danshehu, to the bereaved families.
Ango stated that the university took swift action upon detecting the outbreak, forming a specialized committee led by Prof. Balarabe Adamu Isah, Provost of the College of Health Sciences, to investigate and manage the crisis.
KSUSTA immediately reported the outbreak to the Kebbi State Ministry of Health and the Ministry for Higher Education, leading to a stakeholders’ meeting involving experts from the World Health Organization (WHO), United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), and other medical professionals.
To curb the spread of the disease, the university implemented key measures, including enhanced medical support, improved sanitation, preventive health initiatives, and an immunization campaign in collaboration with WHO, UNICEF, and MSF.
Despite these efforts, six students lost their lives to the disease. “We deeply regret these losses, and our thoughts and prayers are with the affected families,” Ango said.
The university management reassured parents, guardians, and the public of its commitment to ensuring student welfare and encouraged those seeking updates to contact the university’s Public Relations Office.
“We appreciate the continued support and cooperation of our university community and stakeholders as we work tirelessly to overcome this crisis,” Ango concluded.
