Messi Rescues Inter Miami In 1-1 Draw With Charlotte FC

Charlotte, led by former Aston Villa manager Dean Smith, opened the scoring in the 57th minute when Brandt Bronico’s low shot deflected off Karol Swiderski, beating Miami goalkeeper Drake Callender.
The goal sparked urgency in Miami’s play, and Jordi Alba found Lionel Messi with a cross, but the Argentine’s header went straight into the arms of goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina. The Croatian shot-stopper then denied Messi’s effort from the edge of the box.
Messi, however, broke through moments later with a left-footed strike from just outside the area, leveling the match with his 15th goal in as many games.
Inter Miami thought they had won a penalty in the 77th minute after Diego Gomez went down under Adilson Malanda’s challenge. The Charlotte defender was shown a second yellow card, but VAR overturned the penalty, ruling that Malanda had played the ball.

In stoppage time, Miami had a golden opportunity to claim all three points when Alba’s header set up Luis Suarez, but the Uruguayan blasted over the bar from close range under pressure from Kahlina.
