EKO HOT BLOG reports that equipped with chairs, canopies, and sleeping mats, the demonstrators demanded immediate settlement of their entitlements, including overdue palliatives for October 2023 to November 2024, an additional ₦32,000 added to their pensions, bulk payment of the Security Debarment Allowance, and refunds for pension deductions from the salaries of medically boarded soldiers.
Following the protest, reports confirmed that some retirees had begun receiving their payments. The Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Retired Members of the Nigerian Armed Forces, Abiodun Durowaiye-Herbert, confirmed the development, stating, “We have started receiving our benefits; that was why the protest did not hold today.”
Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, commended President Bola Tinubu for prioritizing the welfare of both active and retired military personnel. Matawalle also confirmed the commencement of a three-month salary increase for military personnel, noting that alerts for the payments had been received.
A statement by the Director of Information and Public Relations, Henshaw Ogubike, emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing pension arrears and improving the welfare of military retirees, ensuring that the backlog of entitlements continues to receive critical attention.
The payment of these benefits comes as a relief to the retirees, who had faced months of financial uncertainty and unfulfilled promises.
