Chesapeake Police public information officer Leo Kosinski told CNN that officers responded to the store less than an hour before closing around 10:12 pm (local time) and found the victims and evidence of a shooting.
The police spokesperson, however, did not provide details on exactly how many people were killed or injured.
But Kosinski said the details won’t be available until later Wednesday because investigators were still sweeping the store overnight to look for additional victims or people who may be hiding.
Earlier, he said police believe the number of fatalities is “less than ten.”
Five patients were being treated at Sentara General Hospital in nearby Norfolk, Virginia, a spokesperson for Sentara Healthcare told CNN affiliate WTKR.
“We’re just a couple hours past the initial incident, so everything is very fluid, very new right now,” Kosinski said.
According to the police spokesperson, the shooter is believed to be among the dead.
He noted that it’s not believed any law enforcement officers fired shots during the response.
A law enforcement source told CNN that investigators believe the shooter was an employee or former employee of the store who opened fire on other employees in a break room.
It is believed the shooter at some point turned the gun on himself, according to the source.
In a statement, Walmart expressed shock at the incident.
