N2.2 Billion Drugs Seized at Tincan Port as NDLEA, Customs Arrest Two Suspects

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) intercepted hard drugs worth N2.2 billion at the Tincan Island Port in Lagos.

Ekohotblog reports that the drugs were hidden inside a container imported from Montreal, Canada, and destined for a bonded terminal at the port. Two suspects linked to the shipment, Nwanolue Emeka and Friday Ogbe, have been arrested.

NDLEA Commander at Tincan Island Port, Mitchell Ofoyeju, explained that the operation took place on Friday, December 13, 2024, during a routine container inspection.

NDLEA Chairman, Brigadier-General Buba Marwa (rtd), praised the successful collaboration between the NDLEA and Customs for uncovering the illegal shipment. During the inspection, officers discovered 44 large bags containing cannabis indica with 1,735 parcels weighing 867.5 kilograms.

They also found six coolers holding 87 packs of methamphetamine, weighing 78.3 kilograms. In total, the narcotics weighed 945.8 kilograms, making it one of the largest seizures in recent years.

Customs Comptroller Dera Nnadi, who coordinated the operation, emphasized the importance of teamwork in preventing such drugs from entering the country. He noted that the seizure could have posed a major threat to public safety if not intercepted in time.

Commander Ofoyeju Mitchell highlighted that this was the first time methamphetamine from Canada had been seized at the port. He stressed that the discovery dealt a significant blow to drug trafficking cartels.

Mitchell reaffirmed the NDLEA commitment to collaborating with Customs and other stakeholders to protect Nigeria from the dangers of drug abuse and trafficking.

Investigations into the case are ongoing to uncover the full scale of the trafficking operation. The two arrested suspects, Emeka and Ogbe, will be charged in court once the investigation is completed.
