Speaking during the burning exercise, Adeyeye, who also chairs the Federal Task Force on Fake and Counterfeit Drugs and Unwholesome Processed Foods, reiterated NAFDAC’s commitment to ensuring that food, drugs, cosmetics, medical devices, chemicals, packaged water, and beverages are safe, wholesome, and effective for human consumption. She noted that the agency has implemented strict guidelines for the licensing, sale, and distribution of drug products as part of its efforts to provide quality medicine.
Represented at the event by NAFDAC’s Director of Narcotics and Controlled Substances, Yedunni Adenuga, Adeyeye highlighted the impressive outcomes of recent enforcement activities across several open drug markets—including those in Idumota, Onitsha, Ariara, and Ezeuku.
“We uncovered numerous unregistered and banned products, including Analgin and controlled substances like Tramadol 225mg, which are endangering our nation’s safety,” she explained.
The operation, supported by over 1,000 security personnel from the Military, Police, and DSS with the backing of the NSA, led to the destruction of expired, falsified, controlled, unregistered, and banned medicines from Idumota outlets.
The estimated street value of these illicit products is 100 billion Naira. Over the course of a three-week exercise, several suspects were apprehended, and further investigations are underway—those found culpable will be sanctioned accordingly.
