  • NCDC monitors HMPV globally, with no cases reported in Nigeria.
  • Public urged to maintain hygiene, avoid overcrowding as precautions.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has reassured Nigerians that the country is not under any immediate threat from the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV).

While concerns have arisen globally about the virus, the NCDC confirmed that there is no cause for alarm in Nigeria.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that NCDC Director-General, Dr. Jide Idris, explained during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily that HMPV, although not widely known, has been implicated in various respiratory infections, especially among children and the elderly.

“Let me say, there’s no serious threat for now. That’s one. Two, this HMPV virus, it’s not a new virus. It’s just that it’s not well-known. But it’s been implicated in many respiratory infections over the years, over the countries, especially in children, and elderly people,” .

Dr. Idris assured that while no cases of HMPV have been reported in Nigeria, the country is closely monitoring the situation and remains on high alert.

“We are in a monitoring and alert phase, and that’s why again we take instructions from WHO globally because every country is supposed to report cases like this, any case; any problem to WHO – those things that they consider might become global problems later so that they can alert every other country to get prepared,” he said on the breakfast show.
