EKO HOT BLOG reports that the former governorship candidate said he accepted the nomination with humility and a strong commitment to pursuing a vision of inclusive governance for Lagos State.
According to him, the nomination represents a shared belief that Lagos residents deserve better leadership and a government that serves the interests of all citizens.
“With profound humility, gratitude, and a clear sense of purpose, I accept our party’s nomination to serve as its candidate for Governor of Lagos State in 2027.
“I am deeply grateful for the confidence our great party has placed in me and for our shared belief that Lagos deserves much better—inclusive leadership that works for everyone.
“The real work begins now. Together, we will build the Lagos that we know is possible.
“My friends, it’s time – O TI Ya!,” he wrote.
Doherty added that the focus would now shift from securing the party’s nomination to engaging residents and presenting solutions to the challenges facing Africa’s most populous city.
His emergence signals the beginning of the NDC’s preparations for what is expected to be a keenly contested governorship race in 2027.
Meanwhile, the NDC Director of New Media and Strategic Communications, Theo Abu Agada, also confirmed Doherty’s candidature and expressed confidence in the party’s chances in the next election.
In a post on his X account, Agada described Doherty as the party’s standard bearer and predicted that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) would face a strong challenge in Lagos.
“Ladies and Gentlemen, @funsodoherty is the candidate of our great party, the NDC in Lagos State.

“It is over for the APC in Lagos,” he wrote.
The APC has governed Lagos State since the return of democratic rule in 1999 and remains the dominant political force in the state. However, opposition parties have continued to push for greater electoral gains ahead of the 2027 elections.
