NFF President Pledges Increased Support For Women’s Football
Nigeria Football Federation President, Ibrahim Gusau, has pledged greater support for women’s football in the country, including plans to require Nigeria Premier Football League clubs to establish female teams. This commitment follows the Super Falcons’ commendable performance in their 2-1 loss to France.
Speaking after the match against Les Bleues in Angers, Gusau expressed his satisfaction with the team’s display, despite the absence of key players such as Asisat Oshoala, Rasheedat Ajibade, Oluwatosin Demehin, and Deborah Abiodun.

“We promise Nigeria that anytime we have an international window, we’ll try and see how we can organise a grade A match. This happened to be one of them and you saw the discovery of some of our home girls that we are introducing to the game and they performed extremely well,” Gusau said.
The Falcons, under interim coach Justin Madugu, showed remarkable resilience against a full-strength French side, with Ifeoma Onumonu scoring Nigeria’s consolation goal after Eugenie Le Sommer and Amel Majri had given the hosts a two-goal advantage.
“I must say I am highly delighted and happy by the performance of the girls and by the grace of God, we will continue to give them all the support they need going to the WAFCON in Morocco,” Gusau added.
The NFF boss revealed plans to revolutionise women’s football in Nigeria through a new policy requiring NPFL clubs to establish women’s teams.
“We need to do more to invest in our female football and we are going to come out with a policy to see how we can make it possible for each of our local clubs to see how they can have a female counterpart team because that is the trend that is going on all over the world,” he stated.
The proposed policy aims to follow global trends in women’s football development, with Gusau emphasising its importance for talent exposure.

“That is the only way we can improve our female football. All our NPFL clubs introduce their female counterpart, and then I think we are going to see a lot of these young girls being exposed to the world,” Gusau added.
The Falcons’ performance against France, despite missing several regular starters, has boosted optimism about the team’s potential ahead of the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where they will aim to reclaim their continental crown.
