Nigeria Bans Protest Song Criticizing President Tinubu

Nigerian authorities have banned the broadcast of the song Tell Your Papa by artist Eedris Abdulkareem, which openly criticizes President Bola Tinubu.
The track addresses the president’s son, Seyi Tinubu, urging him to inform his father that Nigerians are suffering due to hunger, hardship, and insecurity.
The National Broadcast Commission (NBC), which oversees media operations in the country, instructed television and radio stations not to air the song, labeling its content as inappropriate and against broadcast standards.
Released earlier this week, the song has stirred intense conversation online, drawing attention to Nigeria’s worsening economic conditions and ongoing security issues.
Since taking office in May 2023, President Tinubu has introduced reforms that significantly raised the cost of living, including the removal of fuel subsidies that led to sharp increases in petrol prices and a ripple effect on essential goods.
With inflation above 30% last year, many households have been forced to reduce their daily food intake. Meanwhile, insecurity remains a major concern, with kidnappings for ransom and fears of renewed insurgent activity in the northeast.
In his lyrics, Abdulkareem accuses the president of making false promises and challenges Seyi Tinubu to travel by road to witness the dangers ordinary citizens face.
While the government argues that its policies are meant to stabilize the economy long-term, it has introduced a cash transfer program to support 15 million low-income households and claims that security has improved over the past 18 months.
This is not the first time Abdulkareem has clashed with authorities. In 2003, he released Nigeria jaga jaga, a controversial song that was also banned but became widely popular among Nigerians.
