The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has apprehended 36 scavengers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) for alleged possession of illicit drugs and weapons.

FCT Commandant Dr. Olusola Odumosu disclosed the arrests on Friday in Abuja, stating that the suspects were detained in various areas of the city.

Items recovered included daggers, jack knives, chisels, codeine syrup, cannabis sativa, and iron rods.

The arrests follow FCT Minister Nyesom Wike’s recent ban on scavenging activities in the FCT and a temporary suspension of pan-takers.

Odumosu explained that the move is part of efforts to curb vandalism, theft of public infrastructure, and other criminal activities.

“These scavengers roam the city, perpetrating crimes under the guise of collecting scrap materials. Many are linked to vandalism and even violent acts,” Odumosu said.

He emphasized that investigations have revealed the suspects often serve as informants to criminals, using household waste to assess residents’ lifestyles and security vulnerabilities.

Odumosu urged residents to avoid patronizing scavengers for refuse disposal, instead using authorized waste management services.

“Although they may seem harmless, these individuals often pose significant threats to the community,” he added.

The commandant called on FCT residents to report suspicious activities and to drive scavengers away from residential areas.

“Together, we can flush out these dangerous elements and make the city safer,” he said.

The arrested suspects are undergoing profiling and investigations, with Odumosu promising thorough prosecution to deter future criminal activities.
