Approximately 25,000 nurses across Nigeria, members of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Federal Health Institutions Sector, have begun a nationwide warning strike today, Wednesday, July 30, 2025.
EKO HOT BLOG reports that, this seven-day industrial action follows the expiration of a 15-day ultimatum given to the federal government.

The nurses are protesting several issues, including poor pay, severe staff shortages, unpaid allowances, and unsafe working conditions.
The striking nurses are demanding that the government officially publish their professional scheme of service, implement a 2012 court ruling concerning their welfare, increase their professional allowances, and hire more nursing staff to address the critical shortage.
This strike is expected to severely disrupt healthcare services across all federal health institutions nationwide.
This includes major facilities like teaching hospitals, federal medical centers, and specialist hospitals, as well as general hospitals and primary healthcare centers in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. Even critical areas such as emergency services, operating theatres, and intensive care units are likely to be affected.

According to Morakinyo Rilwan, the National Chairman of NANNM-FHI, the federal government failed to engage in any negotiations with the nurses despite the ultimatum.
This strike by nurses coincides with an ongoing strike by doctors in Lagos State, highlighting a broader crisis in Nigeria’s health sector stemming from unresolved welfare issues for medical professionals.
If their demands are not met after this warning strike, the nurses plan to issue a 21-day ultimatum before embarking on an indefinite strike.
