Protest in Nigeria

The Take It Back Movement (TIB) has proposed holding a virtual meeting with the Lagos State Police Command, citing logistical challenges as the reason for opting against an in-person discussion.

This proposal was made in a letter sent on Wednesday to Assistant Commissioner of Police, Jaiyeoba Joseph, from the group’s legal team, Inibehe Effiong Chambers.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the letter follows an invitation from the police, delivered on Tuesday, requesting key TIB members, including National Coordinator Sanyaolu Juwon, to meet with the new Commissioner of Police, Olanrewaju Ishola, to discuss matters of national interest.

According to The Punch, an insider from the TIB expressed concerns that a physical meeting could be used as an opportunity to arrest some of their members.

Despite these concerns, police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed the invitation, assuring that the meeting was meant to be friendly and that there were no plans for arrests. He also mentioned that the upcoming October 1 protest would be a key topic of discussion.

In the letter from TIB’s legal team, it was noted that several leaders of the group are currently out of Lagos, making attendance at a physical meeting on short notice difficult.

As a solution, the TIB proposed a virtual meeting to allow all participants to join remotely and effectively discuss the issues at hand.

However, the group added that if an in-person meeting was deemed necessary, they would be open to rescheduling for early October when all members could attend.

The October 1 protest, titled ‘FearlessInOctober,’ aims to address Nigeria’s economic challenges, particularly rising inflation and the ongoing fuel crisis.
