EKO HOT BLOG reports that Police Public Relations Officer, CSP William Ovye-Aya, said in a statement from Lokoja that all passengers were safely evacuated to the Ajaokuta train station before being assisted to continue their journeys. He assured that there were no casualties in the incident.
Ovye-Aya explained that the prompt response followed a distress call received by the command. The Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Kankarofi, immediately deployed security operatives to the site and personally visited the scene to assess the situation.
He said the Commissioner met with officials of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) and some passengers at the site, ensuring that safety measures were quickly put in place.
According to him, “The Commissioner also directed the deployment of additional security personnel to safeguard lives, property, and railway facilities in the area.”
The police command reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with the NRC and other security agencies to maintain safety around rail infrastructure and protect passengers within the state.
Sunday’s derailment comes barely a week after the NRC resumed operations on the Warri–Itakpe line. The service had previously been suspended following a derailment incident in Agbor, Delta State, which disrupted operations for several weeks.
Authorities have yet to disclose the cause of the latest derailment, but investigations are ongoing to prevent future occurrences and ensure the safety of railway transportation.
