PDP hopes zoning to the South will heal past divisions.
Senate Minority Leader, Abba Moro, has disclosed that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is weighing three prominent Southerners as potential candidates for its 2027 presidential ticket.
Speaking on AIT’s programme, Focus Nigeria, Moro revealed that former President Goodluck Jonathan, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde are among those being considered.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that he explained that with the PDP zoning the presidency to the South, the party is reaching out to credible figures with grassroots appeal. Moro noted that Obi, who left the PDP in 2022 due to dissatisfaction with its zoning arrangements, could return to the fold now that the ticket has been reserved for the region.
“Peter Obi left because of the perceived injustice of not zoning the presidency to the South, particularly the Southeast. Now that it has been zoned to the South, he is welcome to join the race,” Moro said.
He further stressed that Jonathan remains a respected statesman and a committed member of the PDP, while Makinde, as a sitting governor, is also seen as a strong contender.
According to Moro, more names will surface as consultations continue. “PDP, being a grassroots party, has many qualified Nigerians from the South who can vie for the presidency. Persuasions and contacts are ongoing, and at the right time, we will present a candidate who can give the ruling party a run for its money,” he stated.

Moro also reflected on the party’s 2022 decision to throw the ticket open, saying it created divisions and prompted defections, particularly among Southern members. He assured that the current zoning arrangement is aimed at resolving those grievances and repositioning the PDP for a stronger outing in 2027.
