Peru stunned Chile and perhaps most of the footballing world in the early hours of today by advancing to the final of Copa America after pounding reigning champions, Chile 3-0.
Peru, who have not won the Copa America since their last victory as far back as 1975, took the lead 20 minutes into the match when a corner from the right was nodded on to Edison Flores, who volleyed home at the back post.
Yoshimar Yotun doubled their lead in the 37th minute after taking advantage of a goalkeeping mistake by Gabriel Arias while captain, Paolo Guerrero, made it 3-0 in stoppage time of second-half.
Just when it looked like they would at least concede a goal to Chile, Peruvian goalkeeper Pedro Gallese saved a dinked penalty from Eduardo Vargas in the closing seconds of the game.
44 years after their last victory, Peru will battle Brazil, who beat Argentina a day earlier, at the Maracana stadium in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday.
