Debate erupts among ADC figures over Obi’s political future.
The National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, Yunusa Tanko, has dismissed speculation that the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is considering a vice presidential slot ahead of the 2027 general election.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Tanko, speaking in an interview with Punch, clarified that Obi is not in talks to become the running mate of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar or any other presidential aspirant.
According to him, Obi’s political ambition remains firmly focused on the presidency, with no discussions whatsoever about accepting a vice presidential position.
“We have never put that on the table. Obi is running for the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. No more, no less. There is no discussion or anything related to him becoming a VP, and we have already released a statement to that effect,” Tanko said.
His comments come amid a public disagreement between African Democratic Congress chieftain, Dele Momodu, and political economist, Professor Pat Utomi, over Peter Obi’s political future ahead of the 2027 elections.
The debate followed Utomi’s warning during a television interview that he would withdraw his support for Obi if the former Anambra State governor accepted a vice presidential slot in any coalition arrangement.
Reacting to Utomi’s remarks, Momodu criticised the position, arguing that ruling out a vice presidential role was politically unrealistic and undemocratic in Nigeria’s current political climate.
“Anyone insisting that Obi cannot run behind anyone is definitely not a Democrat who wishes to rescue Nigeria from one man dictatorship,” Momodu wrote.
While acknowledging his respect for Utomi and their long standing relationship, Momodu insisted that Nigeria’s political environment demands pragmatic strategies rather than idealistic approaches.

Tanko’s statement appears to reinforce Obi’s determination to contest the presidency, as coalition talks among opposition parties continue ahead of the 2027 general election.
