EKO HOT BLOG reports that according to market reports, a 50kg bag of rice now sells for around ₦75,000, down from between ₦90,000 and ₦95,000 in January 2025, marking a 20% decline. Similarly, the price of a large basket of fresh tomatoes has dropped drastically by 70%, from ₦120,000 to ₦35,000 within the same period.
The price reduction is expected to improve affordability for households that rely heavily on these staples.
Garri, another essential food item, has also become more affordable. A 4-liter paint container of garri now sells for ₦2,500, down from ₦3,500, reflecting a 28.5% decrease. Meanwhile, a 60kg bag of garri is currently priced at ₦37,500. In Abuja and Onitsha, the price of a large tuber of yam has fallen from ₦5,500 to ₦2,500, offering consumers a major price relief.
The price of beans, a key protein source, has seen a significant drop of over 20%, with a 50kg bag now selling for ₦80,000, compared to ₦105,000 in January.
Data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) further confirms this downward trend, revealing that Nigeria’s food inflation rate slowed to 23.51% in February 2025, a major improvement from 37.92% recorded in February 2024. The NBS attributes this to improved agricultural yields and strategic government measures to stabilize food prices.
Despite the overall decline, price trends remain inconsistent across states. Sokoto recorded the highest food inflation rate at 38.34%, followed by Edo (35.08%) and Nasarawa (33.53%). On the other hand, Adamawa, Ondo, and Oyo states reported the lowest inflation rates, reflecting the impact of local food production and supply chain efficiency.
