Cooking oils, a key part of festive meals, have recorded significant jumps. A 5-litre keg of palm oil is selling for ₦10,000, maintaining its high cost despite strong demand. A 1-litre bottle of groundnut oil now goes for ₦3,200, a price that has left many buyers expressing concern, particularly those planning large holiday cooking.
Rice remains one of the hardest-hit staples. A 50kg bag of Nigerian local rice currently sells for about ₦54,000, adding to the burden of families preparing for the season.
Market traders explain that the festive period consistently drives up demand, which in turn triggers price increases. They warn that costs may continue to rise as Christmas draws closer, urging shoppers to buy early to avoid further hikes.
