The Executive Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, Hon. (Engr.) Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, on Monday, August 25, 2025, led an inspection tour of ongoing flood mitigation projects in Alakun and Aiyeteju communities.

The intervention is aimed at ensuring the smooth flow of rainwater into proper outlets, thereby minimizing flooding, erosion, and damage to lives and property in the affected areas.
Speaking during the inspection, Hon. Olowa stressed the importance of proactive environmental management.
“Flooding has been a recurring challenge in our communities, especially during the rainy season.
By clearing these critical water channels, we are not only protecting lives and property but also improving sanitation and the general well-being of our people,” he said.
He further emphasized that his administration remains committed to tackling environmental issues head-on.
“This project is about safeguarding our future. We cannot wait for disasters to happen before taking action.
Prevention is always better and more cost-effective than emergency response,” the chairman added.
The Chief Technical Adviser on Environment, Mr. Lateef Ajumobi, explained the technical scope of the work, noting that the deployment of swamp excavators was a strategic move.
“These machines are specifically designed to penetrate swampy terrains and heavily silted canals.
Their role here is to restore natural water pathways and reduce waterlogging in residential areas,” Ajumobi explained.
Community leaders also expressed their appreciation for the intervention. The CDA Chairman of Aiyeteju, Mr. Agbaji Olushola, said,
“We have suffered flooding for many years, and this project is a relief for our people. We thank the council chairman for listening to the cries of the community.”
Accompanying the Chairman on the inspection were the Chief Technical Adviser on Environment, Mr. Lateef Ajumobi; the CTA on Media and Communication, Mr. Yemi Azeez; Personal Assistant to the Chairman, Mr. Adewale Moore;
representative of the Environment Department, Mr. Kolapo Olabode; and the CDA Chairman, Mr. Agbaji Olushola. Their joint presence highlighted the collaborative approach of the initiative, combining technical expertise, administrative oversight, and community partnership.
