Two former inmates have revealed how the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) played a crucial role in their release and rehabilitation after years behind bars.
The testimonies were shared at a conference organised by the RCCG Prison and Hospital Ministry held at the House of Favour Parish, Redemption City, Ogun State, on Saturday.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the ex-inmates, identified as Saheed Adebayo and Bayo Adelakun (not real names), narrated how faith and free legal aid from the RCCG turned their lives around at a time when all hope seemed lost.
Adebayo, a 49-year-old with a Master’s degree in English Language, spent 14 years at the Kirikiri Maximum Correctional Centre after being convicted for kidnapping. He explained that a misunderstanding with a friend who left a car in his custody escalated after the vehicle developed an engine fault. Misinformed, the friend accused him of selling the car, prompting Adebayo to send some boys to intimidate him — a decision he now deeply regrets.
“They beat and detained him for two days. That act led to my arrest and I was charged with kidnapping,” he said. “If I hadn’t strayed from God, perhaps I wouldn’t have ended up in prison.”
He advised young people to avoid bad company and stay rooted in faith.
Adelakun, on his part, recounted how a workplace altercation in 2020 ended in tragedy. In an attempt to defend himself, his colleague fell and died during the scuffle. He was arrested and charged with murder, spending four years in custody before gaining freedom.
“While awaiting trial, I had a dream where Pastor E.A. Adeboye appeared and told someone, ‘Leave my son alone.’ That gave me hope,” he shared.
His case later drew the attention of the RCCG legal team, led by Pastor Ariyo Popoola, who intervened pro bono. Adelakun was discharged and acquitted on May 12, 2025.
Their stories are among the 2,181 lives touched by the RCCG Prison and Hospital Ministry between May 2024 and April 2025 through legal, spiritual, and material interventions.
The National Overseer of RCCG, Pastor Sunday Akande, reaffirmed the church’s commitment to restoring dignity to those in correctional centres and hospitals. “We bring hope to the forgotten and abandoned,” he stated.
Pastor Popoola noted that despite economic challenges, the ministry has remained active across prisons, remand homes, and police stations. “We’ve distributed food, clothing, Bibles, paid GCE fees, and facilitated National Open University enrolments for inmates,” he said.
He added that RCCG’s free legal support continues to secure justice and freedom for those who have no means to defend themselves.
