Full List: Governors Who Ignored Tinubu’s Plea, Refused To Pay Wage Awards.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) condemns governors’ refusal to pay the award, calling it highly insensitive.

Several governors, including those from Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Delta, Abia, and Kebbi states, have yet to implement or have partially implemented the wage awards.
EKO HOT BLOG reports that the federal government, led by President Bola Tinubu, has been paying a ₦35,000 wage award in addition to the ₦30,000 minimum wage to Nigerian workers.
Despite Tinubu’s plea for governors to replicate this gesture, some state leaders have failed to comply.
According to Legit, 15 states have not complied, while 7 have stopped paying the wage award.

The wage award was intended to alleviate economic hardship for workers until the new minimum wage is implemented.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has condemned the governors’ refusal to pay the wage award, describing it as the height of insensitivity.
Below is a list of some states not paying or only partially paying the wage award:
- Akwa Ibom (Governor Umo Eno): Governor Umo Eno has assured that his administration is ready to pay the minimum wage agreed upon by the tripartite committee and that payment will begin as soon as it is passed into law.
- Rivers (Governor Siminalayi Fubara): Governor Fubara has yet to pay the wage award eight months after the federal government began payment. He stated that his government is waiting for the outcome of the tripartite committee, which includes federal government representatives, governors, organized labour, and private organizations.
- Delta (Governor Oborevwori Sheriff): Governor Oborevwori has also failed to begin the wage award payments. Commissioner for Information Ifeanyi Osuoza mentioned that the government would set up a committee to address all wage-related issues, including the minimum wage.
- Abia (Governor Otti): Governor Otti has not begun paying the wage award, stating that his administration is looking into the issue. The NLC in the state has appealed to the governor to approve the ₦35,000 wage award to alleviate workers’ economic hardships.
- Kebbi (Governor Nasir Idris): The government of Kebbi state announced the establishment of a committee on May 1 to devise a workable minimum wage for state workers. However, Governor Idris’s leadership has yet to commence the payment of wage awards.
Other states that have yet to start paying or have paid partially include:
- Borno (Governor Babagana Zulum): Governor Zulum has been distributing food and palliatives but has failed to pay the wage award.
- Yobe (Governor Mai Mala Buni): Governor Buni is also distributing food and palliatives but has not followed the wage award directive.
- Katsina (Governor Umaru Radda): Governor Radda paid ₦15,000 and ₦10,000 twice to workers and pensioners.
- Bauchi (Governor Bala Muhammad): Governor Muhammad paid ₦10,000 to workers during Eid-el-Fitr and distributed food palliatives.
- Niger (Governor Muhammed Bago): Governor Bago paid ₦20,000 once.
- Nasarawa (Governor Abdullahi Sule): Governor Sule paid ₦10,000 to workers twice and ₦5,000 to pensioners for four months.
- Plateau (Governor Caleb Mutfwang): Governor Mutfwang paid ₦12,000 for six months.
