Representative Al Green was removed from the House chamber on Tuesday night after heckling President Donald Trump during his joint address to Congress.
Green, a Democratic lawmaker from Houston, Texas, interrupted Trump’s speech just minutes after it began, shouting, “Mr. President, you don’t have a mandate!”—a reference to proposed Medicaid cuts. His outburst was swiftly drowned out by Republican lawmakers who erupted into chants of “U-S-A! U-S-A!” before House Speaker Mike Johnson ordered his removal from the chamber.

A longtime critic of President Trump, Green had previously called for his impeachment during Trump’s first term. Speaking to reporters after his ejection, he remained defiant, stating that he was prepared to accept any consequences for his actions.
“Trump has no mandate to cut Medicaid,” Green insisted, reaffirming his opposition to the administration’s policies. He also revealed that he is preparing articles of impeachment against the president.
“This is the richest country in the world, and yet we have people who don’t have access to quality health care. Now, we’re about to cut Medicaid, which serves the poor. We have to do better,” he said.
Green was not the only Democrat to stage a protest during the address. Several Democratic women arrived in pink dresses to highlight the economic challenges facing women, arguing that rising costs under Trump’s leadership have disproportionately affected them. Meanwhile, some lawmakers wore yellow and blue ties in a symbolic show of support for Ukraine, reflecting the colours of the country’s flag.

The silent protests came in response to Trump’s announcement on Monday that he is pausing all military aid to Ukraine, just days after a tense Oval Office meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Throughout the speech, most Democrats remained seated and largely refrained from reacting. However, some silently held up placards reading “FALSE” in response to certain claims made by the president.
In stark contrast, Republican lawmakers frequently interrupted the address with loud applause and spontaneous chants of “U-S-A!”, demonstrating their unwavering support for the president.
