Rivers’ New Military Administrator
Following President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, retired Chief of Naval Staff, Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, has been appointed as the state’s military administrator.

Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas was born on September 27, 1960, in Nko, Cross River State.
He joined the Nigerian Navy in 1979 and served until his retirement in 2021, marking 42 years of active military service.
Mr. Ibas became Nigeria’s 22nd Chief of Naval Staff in 2015 and held the position until 2021.
He attended Nko Primary School, Big Qua Primary School, and Hope Waddell Training Institute, Calabar. He later attended the School of Basic Studies, Ogoja, before proceeding to the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) in 1979.
He trained at several prestigious institutions, including the Amphibious Warfare School at the U.S. Marine Corps University, Virginia (1992) and the National Defence College, Islamabad, Pakistan.
He holds a Master’s degree in Defence and Strategic Studies from Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad, Pakistan.
His awards include the ECOMOG Medal, Forces Service Star, and the national honor of Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR), conferred by former President Muhammadu Buhari.
President Tinubu appointed Mr. Ibas as Rivers State’s military administrator following political tensions between Governor Sim Fubara and former Governor Nyesom Wike, a key ally of the president.
With decades of military leadership, Mr. Ibas is expected to restore stability in Rivers State amid its political crisis.
His appointment marks the first time in years that a naval officer has taken charge of Rivers State’s administration under a military decree.
