Russia unleashed a fresh wave of air attacks on Ukraine overnight, launching six missiles and dozens of drones that killed one person and severely damaged two hospitals, Ukrainian officials said early Wednesday.
Ukraine’s air force reported that defence systems intercepted 72 of the 145 drones deployed but did not provide details on the missiles.
In the northeastern Sumy region, prosecutors said a hospital was struck late Tuesday while 21 staff members and 147 patients were inside. A second nearby hospital came under repeated attack as 11 employees and 49 patients sheltered in place.
“The hospital premises were heavily damaged. A fire broke out,” said the prosecutor general’s office.
Separately, a Russian strike on a residential building in the same region killed a 29-year-old man and injured three others, according to prosecutors.

The attacks came just hours after Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump held a phone conversation, during which Putin reportedly agreed to pause strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure—a move that had been backed by Ukraine. However, no wider ceasefire agreement was reached during the call.
Despite the supposed pause, Ukraine’s national railway service reported that drones targeted a railway energy facility in the central Dnipropetrovsk region. Although the attack did not disrupt train services, the railway company criticized the strike, saying: “So much for a pause in attacks on the energy sector or an ‘energy truce’ from the enemy.”
Meanwhile, in Bucha near Kyiv—a city that was briefly occupied by Russian forces early in the war—a French citizen was injured in an overnight drone strike, according to AFP reporters. Several buildings and vehicles were also damaged in the area.
