Speaking during his national address to mark Saint Lucia’s 2025 Emancipation Day, Eko Hot Blog reports that Prime Minister Pierre criticized the backlash that followed President Tinubu’s recent official visit to the island nation.

President Tinubu’s visit was part of a wider diplomatic mission aimed at building stronger ties with Saint Lucia and other members of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States.
Despite the visit’s objectives, some Nigerian political activists and commentators expressed disapproval, sparking a wave of online criticism.
In reaction, Pierre lamented what he referred to as the lingering effects of slavery, saying it continues to manifest as self-hate and a tendency among some to view Africans and their descendants as inferior.
“The response to President Tinubu’s visit reflects the psychological remnants of slavery that many still carry. It is heartbreaking when people attack their own due to colonial mindsets,” Pierre stated.

He reiterated Saint Lucia’s commitment to deepening its relationship with Nigeria, particularly through the memorandum of understanding recently signed by both countries.
Pierre emphasized that such collaborations are vital for reconnecting Africa with the Caribbean and for rebuilding cultural, economic, and political links broken by centuries of colonization and slavery.
