Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State on Thursday expressed deep sympathy to the families, organisations, and residents affected by the fire outbreak at Afriland Towers.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, September 16.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that in a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Gboyega Akosile, the governor described the fire as a tragic incident that resulted in the loss of lives and destruction of property worth millions of naira.
Sanwo-Olu extended his condolences specifically to the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and United Capital PLC, financial and investment firms that lost four and six staff members respectively in the blaze.
He noted,
“The fire at Afriland Towers is deeply distressing and represents a significant loss to the Lagos State Government, FIRS, United Capital, and other affected parties. It is with a heavy heart that I received this news.”
The governor also sent his thoughts and prayers to the injured, wishing them a quick recovery, while sympathising with traders at the nearby Central Plaza, near Mandilas Market, who reportedly lost goods and assets valued in millions.
Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving safety protocols and emergency response systems to prevent future occurrences.
He praised the prompt response of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), as well as the Federal Fire Service and other first responders for their efforts in controlling the fire and limiting casualties.
This fire is regarded as one of the most serious commercial building incidents on Lagos Island in recent years.
