EKO HOT BLOG reports that the confirmation followed the presentation and adoption of the report by the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance, and Other Financial Institutions, chaired by Senator Adetokunbo Abiru (APC, Lagos East).
While presenting the committee’s findings during plenary, Senator Abiru urged his colleagues to approve the nominations submitted by President Bola Tinubu in May.
“The Senate received and considered the report of the committee on the confirmation of the nominations for appointment as Managing Director and Executive Director of the Nigerian Deposit Insurance Corporation,” Abiru said.
He noted that the nominees had met all statutory requirements and were found competent to take up the appointments.
The NDIC plays a crucial role in maintaining public confidence and ensuring stability within Nigeria’s banking sector by providing insurance coverage for depositors and strengthening risk management frameworks.
With Thursday’s confirmation, Oludare Sunday and Kabir Kataka are expected to immediately assume office, with the financial industry looking to their leadership to drive operational improvements and reinforce confidence in Nigeria’s financial system.
President Tinubu had forwarded the nominations in line with the regulatory provisions governing appointments into federal financial oversight bodies. Senate President Godswill Akpabio formally presented the president’s request during plenary and referred it to the appropriate committee for legislative review.
The new NDIC leadership is expected to align with the federal government’s ongoing economic reforms and support efforts to rebuild trust in the financial system amid global economic pressures.
