EKO HOT BLOG reports that the decision to enter a private session followed the reading of President Tinubu’s official letter to the Senate by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during plenary.

Shortly after, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele moved a motion for a closed session, citing Order 135 of the Senate’s rules, which allows for confidential deliberations on sensitive national matters. The motion was seconded by Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro.

The Senate’s decision to deliberate behind closed doors underscores the gravity of the situation in Rivers State, where the president’s actions have sparked widespread political debate and controversy.

On Tuesday, March 18, President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, attributing the decision to escalating political unrest in the region.

The declaration was followed by the immediate suspension of Governor Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and all members of the Rivers State House of Assembly for an initial period of six months.

In an unprecedented move, the president appointed Vice Admiral Ibok-Ette Ibas (retd.) as the sole administrator of Rivers State to oversee governance during the period of political instability. The appointment of a military officer to manage the state has raised questions among legal and political analysts regarding the constitutional implications of Tinubu’s decision.
