Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has reassured traders that ongoing redevelopment works at Ariaria International Market and Ekeoha Market in Aba will not displace existing shop owners.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the governor gave the assurance on Thursday at the Michael Okpara Auditorium while hosting members of the National Executive Council of the National Association of Nigerian Traders.

Otti stated that current shop owners would be given priority in the allocation of the newly remodelled shops.

He explained that a “right of first refusal” policy had been firmly put in place, meaning no shop would be reassigned unless the original owner willingly declined it. He added that any official who violates the directive would have their actions overturned.
He also noted that the redesigned markets would have enough units to cater for both existing traders and new entrants.
Acknowledging the prevailing economic challenges, Otti revealed that his administration had partnered with a few banks to provide financial support for traders who may struggle to pay for the upgraded shops.
According to him, soft loan arrangements have been secured to ensure that temporary cash constraints do not result in anyone losing their business space.

The governor cautioned against attempts by individuals to assume the role of developers in the project, stressing that construction would be handled centrally to maintain quality standards.
He maintained that his administration would not compromise on durability and proper planning.
Otti further directed relevant authorities to keep traders well-informed about the progress and details of the remodelling process. He emphasised that his government is committed to fairness and would not allow any trader to be cheated.
Earlier, National President of the National Association of Nigerian Traders, Ken Ukoha, commended the governor for improvements recorded in the state, particularly within the markets.

He said members of the association had toured facilities in Aba and observed notable upgrades, including better infrastructure and improved business conditions.
While expressing appreciation, Ukoha appealed to the governor to involve traders in aspects of the redevelopment process to safeguard their interests.
The remodelling of Ariaria and Ekeoha markets is part of the state government’s broader efforts to modernise commercial hubs and enhance ease of doing business in Abia.
