Speaking at the event, Dr. Alausa said the collaboration aligns with the Federal Government’s Transnational Education Policy, which provides guidelines for cross-border academic programmes aimed at increasing access to tertiary education, easing admission pressures, and promoting global exchange of ideas and research.
According to the Minister, the policy is also designed to attract foreign investment and funding into Nigeria’s education sector, supporting institutional growth and national development.
Dr. Alausa noted that the partnership between UNILAG and the University of Birmingham supports the government’s broader education reform agenda under the National Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI), which focuses on improving quality, accessibility, and global competitiveness.
“Our goal is to create an education ecosystem that promotes critical thinking, creativity, entrepreneurship, and global relevance,” he said, adding that NESRI prioritises infrastructure development, teacher training, and technology integration areas expected to benefit from international collaborations.

Under the agreement, the University of Birmingham will offer validated study programmes to be delivered at the University of Lagos, providing Nigerian students with access to internationally recognised curricula and prestigious degrees without leaving the country.
The Minister said the Transnational Education partnership would also open opportunities for joint research in emerging fields such as renewable energy, healthcare, and artificial intelligence, while enhancing students’ employability, skills acquisition, and global exposure.
He stressed that the collaboration has the potential to contribute significantly to Nigeria’s socio-economic development by leveraging global expertise to address both local and international challenges.
Dr. Alausa commended the leadership of both universities for embracing innovation and international cooperation, expressing optimism about the long-term impact of the partnership on students, institutions, and the nation at large.
He urged stakeholders in the education sector to fully harness the opportunities presented by transnational partnerships to shape the future of Nigerian education and prepare graduates to compete successfully on the global stage.
