Shettima Departs For Sierra Leone To Represent Tinubu At 69th ECOWAS Summit
West African leaders will discuss security, democracy and economic integration.
Vice President will return to Nigeria after the regional meeting concludes.

Vice President Kashim Shettima has departed Abuja for Freetown, Sierra Leone, where he will represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 69th Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the regional summit is scheduled to take place at the Julius Maada Bio International Conference Centre in Freetown and is expected to bring together heads of state and government, ministers, senior government officials and representatives of regional institutions.

A statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications in the Office of the Vice President, Stanley Nkwocha, said Shettima would join political and business leaders from across West Africa and beyond to discuss key issues affecting the sub region.

According to the statement, the summit will focus on strengthening regional cooperation and developing collective strategies to address common challenges facing ECOWAS member states.

The Presidency said leaders are expected to deliberate on major policy issues and adopt strategic resolutions aimed at promoting peace, democracy, economic growth and deeper regional integration across the ECOWAS bloc.

The meeting forms part of the organisation’s statutory mid year engagements, during which member states review progress made in implementing regional priorities and assess the bloc’s response to emerging challenges.

Key areas expected to dominate discussions include regional security, democratic governance, trade, infrastructure development, economic integration and sustainable development.

The summit comes at a time when several West African countries continue to grapple with terrorism, political transitions and economic pressures, prompting renewed efforts to strengthen cooperation and collective action within the region.

The Presidency stated that Vice President Shettima is expected to return to Abuja after the conclusion of the summit.
