The Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Kayode Opeifa, has called for stronger connections between Nigeria’s rail lines and seaports, saying it is key to easing the daily struggles faced by businesses, transporters, and commuters, Eko Hot Blog reports.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting, Opeifa explained that while investments in ports and maritime infrastructure are increasing, many Nigerians still feel the impact of delays, high transport costs, and congestion especially in busy areas like Lagos.

For importers and traders, slow cargo evacuation often means higher prices for goods, which eventually affects everyday consumers. Opeifa stressed that improving rail connections to ports would help move goods faster, reduce pressure on roads, and lower the cost of doing business.
He revealed that efforts are already underway to improve the system, including plans to extend the Lagos-Ibadan rail line to Apapa and Tin Can Island ports, making it easier to transport cargo directly from the ports by rail instead of relying heavily on trucks.
Other planned connections include linking rail lines to Warri, Port Harcourt, and inland ports, as well as a new route expected to connect the Lekki Deep Sea Port to major rail corridors.

According to him, these projects will not only improve efficiency but also create jobs, reduce traffic congestion, and support economic growth across the country.
Opeifa also encouraged stakeholders in the transport and logistics sector to support the initiative, noting that collaboration is essential to building a system that works for everyone from port operators to small business owners and everyday Nigerians.
