Citizens Gavel, a leading civic tech organization, has initiated legal proceedings against TikTok over the social media platform’s alleged failure to effectively tackle exploitative content involving minors, Eko Hot Blog reports.
According to Sylvester Agih, Senior Legal Analyst at Citizens Gavel, concerns were initially raised with TikTok two months ago, but insufficient measures were taken to address the issue.

Agih highlighted the organization’s commitment to monitoring TikTok’s evolving nature and expressed disappointment over the growing presence of harmful content aimed at young users.
The decision to pursue legal action aims to pressure TikTok into implementing stricter safeguards to protect minors and curb exploitative content on its platform.
He said: “Contrary to what TikTok as a platform is meant for, which is a place for creatives to show their talent or skill, we have observed a shift to where adult users would invite young girls to partake in certain inappropriate activities.
“We wrote TikTok about 2 months ago raising some of these concerns and making certain recommendations, and they actually took some steps, but beyond that nothing else was done. Because it was like treating the symptoms without tackling the root cause.
