Eko Hot Blog reports that six traders appeared before the Chief Magistrate Court in Lagos Island Local Government on Thursday, facing charges for the alleged assault and blackmail of Nollywood actress Lizzy Anjorin-Lawal.

The accused—Qudus Jokogbola, Suru Olawale, Edu Shakirat, Fausat Mohammed, Kafayat Ahmed, and Opere Simiat Morenike—stood trial, while two additional suspects are currently at large.

Prosecutor Sola Samuel detailed the charges, asserting that the six defendants, in collaboration with two others, conspired to forcefully push and drag Anjorin-Lawal, causing her grievous bodily harm within Oba Akintoye Market in Lagos Island around 1:30 p.m. on Monday.

Samuel underscored that the defendants’ actions resulted in a breach of public peace.

“These charges are serious and reflect a breach of the peace in our community. The court will ensure a thorough investigation to bring justice to the victim,” stated Sola Samuel during the proceedings.

All six defendants entered pleas of not guilty to the charges.

The defence lawyer, Ade Oshodi, appealed to the court to grant bail to the defendants in the most liberal terms, citing their occupation as traders.

In response, Magistrate A.A. Paul ruled to grant each defendant bail in the sum of N200,000 with one surety each, provided the sureties are Lagos residents with evidence of tax payment.

Until meeting their bail terms, the defendants were remanded in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Services.

“This incident is a reminder that everyone, regardless of their profession, is entitled to safety and protection from harm. The court will diligently pursue justice to maintain public order,” remarked Magistrate A.A. Paul during the hearing.
