Rescue operations are ongoing on the remote Tibetan slopes of Mount Everest after a fierce snowstorm trapped nearly 1,000 people at campsites on the eastern side of the mountain, according to Chinese state media.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that hundreds of rescuers, including local villagers and emergency response teams, have been deployed to clear thick snow that has blocked access roads leading to the affected area, which lies at an altitude of more than 4,900 metres (16,000 feet).
Authorities confirmed that some stranded tourists have already been rescued, while efforts continue to locate others.
The snowstorm began on Friday evening and intensified overnight, dumping heavy snow across the eastern slopes of Everest, a region frequented by hikers and climbers.
Reports said several tents collapsed under the weight of the snow, with some hikers showing signs of hypothermia before rescue teams reached them.
In response, Tingri County Tourism Company has suspended ticket sales and closed entry into the Everest Scenic Area to ensure public safety. The storm has also compounded an already severe weather situation across the region.
Neighbouring Nepal has been devastated by days of torrential rain, which triggered flash floods and landslides that destroyed bridges and killed at least 47 people. Meanwhile, in China, Typhoon Matmo has forced the evacuation of about 150,000 residents from coastal areas.
Mount Everest, the world’s highest peak at 8,849 metres, remains one of the most dangerous climbing destinations despite its popularity.
In recent years, the mountain has faced mounting concerns over overcrowding, environmental degradation, and fatal climbing accidents, challenges that continue to test both local authorities and adventurers.
