EKO HOT BLOG reports that when newly elected governors were sworn in on May 29, 2023, the PDP controlled 11 states, firmly positioning it as the country’s main opposition party. That dominance within opposition ranks has since eroded following a series of high profile defections.
The party now has only four serving governors, Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State, Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State.
The reduction from 11 governors to four has intensified concerns about the shrinking strength and bargaining power of the opposition ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Sunday Vanguard gathered that at least one of the remaining PDP governors may also be considering a defection before the next general elections.
“One of the remaining governors would soon dump the party for a viable platform. He needs a new platform to survive,” a source disclosed.
The prospect of further exits has deepened anxiety within opposition circles, raising questions about the PDP’s capacity to remain competitive at both state and national levels.

While some political analysts maintain that defections are part of Nigeria’s democratic evolution and freedom of association, others caution that continued consolidation of power by the ruling party could weaken institutional checks and balances that are essential to a vibrant democracy.
