EKO HOT BLOG reports that Sowunmi, a longtime PDP member and known political ally of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, made the clarification during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday. His statement came a day after he held a closed-door meeting with President Tinubu, sparking speculations of betrayal within opposition circles.
Addressing the issue, Sowunmi dismissed suggestions that his visit to the President amounted to defection or political sabotage. “Is he [Atiku] running for president now? He is running a coalition that everybody knows I am not part of,” he stated firmly.
Sowunmi also downplayed speculation about Atiku’s 2027 presidential ambition, noting that he is unaware of any confirmed plans by the former Vice President to contest again.
Asked if he had Atiku’s consent before meeting Tinubu, Sowunmi responded by asserting his independence and right to political association. “Why would you even in your wildest dream think that I don’t have my individuality? Because of what?” he asked.
He emphasized his loyalty to the PDP, stating, “Do you know how long I’ve been in the party? Since the beginning, I’ve never left. I won’t say the same about them.”

Sowunmi’s comments signal a clear effort to assert personal political agency amid the growing divide within the opposition. While reaffirming his place within the PDP, he stressed that his decisions are guided by his convictions, not allegiance to individuals.
