President Bola Tinubu has officially flagged off the reconstruction of the 122-kilometre Kaduna (Mando)–Birnin Gwari Road, declaring that the project fulfils a major campaign promise made to residents of Birnin Gwari during the 2023 presidential election campaign, Eko Hot Blog reports.
Represented by Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani at the groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday, Tinubu recalled visiting Birnin Gwari in December 2022 despite security concerns over banditry and kidnappings in the area.

He said he had promised residents that his administration would reconstruct the road and restore security to the area.
“At that meeting in Birnin Gwari, I promised to reconstruct the road from Mando, Kaduna, to Birnin Gwari. I also promised to do everything possible to restore security and normalcy to Birnin Gwari. Today, both promises have been fulfilled,” the President said.
Tinubu described the road as a strategic national infrastructure linking the North West to the South West through several states up to Lagos, adding that the Federal Executive Council had approved ₦178.12 billion for the reconstruction project.
Governor Sani commended the President and the Minister of Works, David Umahi, for facilitating the approval and funding of the project.
He also disclosed that the Kaduna State Government is constructing 36 kilometres of asphalt roads across 72 farming communities in Birnin Gwari Local Government Area, describing the projects as evidence of improving peace and stability in the area.
Sani further highlighted other Federal Government projects approved for Kaduna State, including the proposed $865 million Kaduna Light Rail Project, the Western Bypass and other major infrastructure developments.
According to him, Northern Nigeria is currently benefiting from unprecedented federal infrastructure investment.
“We thank President Tinubu for his love for the North, for humanity and for progress. We are grateful that he recognises Kaduna as the heart of Northern Nigeria,” he said.
The governor also pledged continued political support for the President, saying public confidence grows when campaign promises are matched with action.
Earlier, Works Minister David Umahi described Tinubu as “a promise keeper,” saying the Kaduna–Birnin Gwari Road would improve security, reduce travel time and stimulate agriculture and commercial activities along the corridor.
“This road is not just about transportation. It is about restoring economic life, improving security, promoting agriculture and connecting millions of Nigerians to greater opportunities,” Umahi said.
He disclosed that construction would commence simultaneously from both ends of the project and that the highway would feature solar-powered streetlights and extensive tree planting to improve safety and environmental sustainability.
Umahi also said several inherited highway projects, including sections of the Abuja–Kaduna–Zaria–Kano Road, were nearing completion, adding that improved road infrastructure has contributed to reduced insecurity along major transport corridors.
He urged Nigerians to assess the Tinubu administration based on its infrastructure delivery and ongoing reforms.
